Effective Activities to Relieve Stress of Moms Based on a Small Survey

Being a stay-at-home mom can be very taxing. In fact, in this research, it was concluded that a mom with three kids has more stress than any other number of kids.

In another study, married women are more likely to experience stress than single women.

Although the results of these studies do not have that much of the difference between working moms and stay-at-home moms, and between genders, women experience more stress. For this reason, it’s important to find activities to relieve stress. Studies also show that a parent’s ability to manage stress contributes to the quality of her relationship with her children. 

I’ve asked my fellow stay-at-home moms about their activities to relieve stress at home. Here’s the result of my crowdsourcing with 54 respondents.

Music

This is a major stress-buster among moms. Singing your heart out while in the shower, cleaning the house, or while cooking is a great way to vent your deep-seated emotions healthily. Some play their favorite pop songs, while others find relief on praise and worship songs. Personally, dance music or any upbeat music relieves my worries and anxiety.

Pray

This is the best defense in any kind of problem you have. Nothing beats the power of prayer that’s why this is the first thing that I do. It does not matter what you’re doing or whether you’re in church or not. You can pray anywhere, and anytime. The bible says, “Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Movies

Watching movies gives you a break from anything that’s bothering you and it has special effects on your body. It does matter if you’re in the cinema or just at home. It also does not matter how big your television is.

Watching transports you to a different time and place even for just a short time. This gives your brain a much-needed rest from the hustle at home. This form of stress reliever of watching movies elicits emotions.

Happy emotion is what stay-at-home moms need, so it’s best if you would watch happy and fun movies. Why? Because a study by researchers at the University of Maryland found out that laughing while watching a comedic film causes your blood vessels to dilate by 22 percent. The effect is you’re lowering your blood pressure to the same extent that you’d lower it when you do physical exercise. Laughing also relieves anxiety, as well as reduces aggression and fear. 

Eat

One of the most common activities to relieve stress is eating. Which is also one of the reasons for obesity and other health problems.

This would only become a stress reliever when you’re eating your comfort food such as chocolates, pastries, ice cream, etc. But don’t go crazy eating these kinds of food because binge-eating on unhealthy foods will, of course, cause more problems for you in the long run. You always want to be healthy for your kids, right?

Try to eat healthy foods that promote mental health and good mood.

Cook

Getting busy in the kitchen as you crank up your specialty dish or create your recipe is a creative activity to relieve stress. A hobby such as this not only produces a yummy result which is your dish but also allows you to get your creativity flowing.

Instead of taking your stress out on other people, concoct a brand new recipe that also your kids can enjoy. Stir up some fun while cooking by playing fun music and dance around the kitchen as you prepare dinner. Don’t worry about looking silly. Who cares?

Exercise

Just like other activities, exercise can take your mind off your worries since physical activity such as exercise allows you to focus on your body rather than your mind.

The top life and business strategist and bestselling author, Tony Robbins said, “Motion creates emotion.” If you’re a slouch potato, chances are you feel lousy, lazy, unmotivated, and this contributes to being sad and depressed. The opposite is true when you’re dancing, playing some sports, or doing some exercise, and maybe even just cleaning the house as long as you have physical activity. 

Studies show that exercise can reduce stress, fatigue, improves alertness and concentration, and enhances overall cognitive function. Scientists also found out that five-minute aerobic exercise can stimulate anti-anxiety effects.

Clean

While other moms are tired of cleaning (like me), others make cleaning as their stress-relieving activity. Maybe it’s not exactly the cleaning part that they enjoy, but they like the result of decluttering and organizing.

The added benefit to it is the exercise you get from moving around the house, going up and down the stairs, or carrying stuff to dispose of or rearrange. In a 2010 study published by Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, it was found out that females who are living in a cluttered home showed higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

This is my favorite activity to relieve my stress. It allows you to escape the real world and get absorbed with the beauty of the story.

A 2009 study at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. And did you know that book reading can increase your survival by up to 23% or almost 2 years longer over the 12-year follow-up compared to non-readers?

This is a study done by the  Health and Retirement Study. Isn’t it great to spend an additional two more years with your kids? 

Others

There are other activities to relieve stress that stay-at-home mom respondents do such as gardening, playing video games, playtime with kids, yoga, and meditation. 

There could be other stress-relieving activities but the key takeaway here is to never take stress lightly. Being a stay-at-home mom is never easy even if you have your mom to help you.

 

There’s a lot on your shoulders and you can forget about yourself sometimes which leads to exhaustion and then stress. 

Take a break. Do something that will get your mind off your chores, problems, worries, and anxieties. Divert your focus to things that will bring you joy, relax your mind, foster creativity, and promote a healthy mind and body.
